BACOLOD CITY, June 17 (PIA) -- Outgoing Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Maranon, Jr. urged Negrenses to become channels of peace.

This he said during the celebration of the 121st Independence Day at the Provincial Capitol Lagoon.

He said that about half the time since Filipinos became independent is spent fighting insurgency which is one of Asia's oldest armed struggle as turmoil in Mindanao still persists.

The governor said sustainable progress can only be achieved if there is peace.

He further appealed for unity for the sake of the people of the province.

Maranon noted that freedom from the bondage of poverty is the biggest problem of the country as there is injustice and so much imbalance in the distribution of wealth.

In his speech, Maranon also thanked the employees of the Negros Occidental provincial government and national agencies for their support to his leadership while serving as governor.

He served the government in various capacities for 50 years now, as Sagay City mayor, congressman and governor of Negros Occidental. (JBG/LLJR-PIA6)
