YANGON, Myanmar The Military Junta declared Monday night that Aung San Suu Kyi and Win Myint would only have to serve half of the four-year terms they were given earlier in the day.

According to the announcement, the two leaders will serve the remaining two years of their sentences at their "current place of detention," which is different from the typical practice of moving prisoners once they've been convicted.

Since their arrests on February 1, the two deposed leaders have been held in unidentified places under house arrest-like conditions.

Suu Kyi, 76, and Win Myint, 70, were sentenced to four years in prison, each by a Naypyitaw court on accusations of incitement and violating Covid-19 laws.

After months of hearings, the punishments were the first to be handed down to the ousted civilian leaders.
